Research fields, Directions and Tasks
The department of wood based panel, studying of forestry biomass resources including woody plants, grasses and vines, mainly focuses on the theories and methods for reconstitution of wood materials and wood based composites. The research fields include structural design and manufacturing technologies of wood and non-wood based panels, wood/metal composites, wood/inorganic composites, and wood/polymer composites, and developing environmental friendly materials. All those researches are to provide technical supports for the wood industry in China.

The department of wood based panels was founded in 1958. In the 1980’s, it was constituted of three groups including plywood, particle board and fiber board. At the beginning of the 21st century, the department merged with adhesive research section. Nearly the research in the particular fields include functionally wood based composites, wood based structural materials, wood reconstituted materials and non-wood based composites. Now the environmental impact assessment of wood based composite and volatile organic compound (VOC) emission and control areas are strengthened too.

The department has 15 research faculties, 4 professors, 8 associate professors and 3 engineers, of whom. 6 have Ph. D degree. Among the faculties, there are 4 doctoral supervisors and 3 master supervisors. There are 3 postdoctoral research fellows, 6 registered Ph. D students and 11 M. Sc. Students in the department too.
Now the research condition of this department has reached the advanced level of predominance in the wood based composite research field of China. The department owns plywood lab, particle board lab, resin synthesis lab, bioadhesive lab, wood dying lab, wood mechanical lab, environmental assessment lab, functional material lab, wood glue and assessment lab.
Research Achievements
Since 1978, Over 200 papers have been published, among which over 50 were published in famous journals. As chief editor or assistant editor, The department has taken part in 5 books’ writing wood industry practical complete series including plywood, particle, fiber board volume and so on. 4 National Scientific Conference awards have been gained since 1978. 3 Third Awards of National Scientific Progress 3
Second Awards and 22 Third Awards of State Forestry Administration Scientific Progress, 12 national Invention Patents and 14 Utility Model Patents, and still has been awarded over 10 prizes of provincial or ministerial Scientific Progress and over 30 provincial or ministerial scientific achievements. were awarded In those years.
The department works hard on the research tasks assigned by the state and related governing institutions, and at the same time actively goes into the market, providing information technology services and consultation services for wood based panel enterprises. The department has transferred more than 100 technologies to enterprisessince the 1980’s, making outstanding achievements on the development of wood based panel industry.

As the state-level research institute, the department of wood based panel has a long history on training students. it has cultivated and trained a large number of scientific researchers and technologists for research institutes, academies and wood base panel enterprises all over the country before China’s Reform and Opening-up. And after that time, it started to recruit graduates students, and now owns 4 doctorial supervisors- professor Jinlin Wang , professor Zheng Wang , professor Feng Fu ,and professor Wenji Yu , and some master supervisors such as associate professor Zhilin Chen, associate professor Ling Long and associate professor Yu Zhou. Up to now, 6 students have obtained their Ph. D degrees and about 20 students have obtained their master degrees in the department.
Some important projects conducted
 
In recent years, department of wood based panel has undertaken over 10 national projects in terms of National Key Technologies R&D Program, National Basic Research Projects, National High-tech R&D Program ands R&D Infrastructure and facility Development, respectively. It also has conducted over 20 research programs from Scientific and Technological Achievement Transformation Project of Ministry of Science and Technology, “948 Project” introduced by National Forestry Bureau, and national standards and industry standards.
During the period from 2001 to 2005, the department of wood based panel, traced frontier sciences and technologies around the world and hot issues in practical production,was the first institute to into the application researches and related deep fundamental researches, and made some outstanding achievements in manufacturing theories and technologies of wood dying and veneer, wood/plastic composite, functionally wood based composite, non-wood based composite (such as composites made from bamboo and agricultural stalks) and recycle utilization of waste wood based materials for wood based panel, environmental assessment of wood based panel and VOC emission and control technology. All of those research fields in this department are in leading or advanced levels in China.
International Cooperation and Communication
  
Since China’s Reform and Opening-up, the department pays important attention to communicate with international research institutes and enterprises in the related fields, and has been established good cooperation with Japan, America, Canada, Australia, Malaysia, UK and so on. International cooperation and communication is strengthened through international research cooperation, talents cultivation and international exchange visits and so on. In the late 1980’s, the department, supported by FAO, introduced into a complete set of fiber board experimental apparatus from Austria, and particle board experimental apparatus from Germany. The experimental apparatus the department were improved greatly. In recent years, it also has been funded by many international projects such as International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), World Bank loans, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and so on.
